Corrosion Engineering

May 21, 2010

Corrosion engineering is the application of science and art to prevent or control the corrosion damage economically and safely. In order to perform their function properly, corrosion engineers must be well versed in the practices and principles of corrosion, the chemical, metallurgical, physical, and mechanical properties of materials, corrosion testing, the nature of corrosive invigorants, the [...]

Testing

May 21, 2010

Testing Q: Why is non-destructive testing is necessary? A: Because visual inspection can only detect surface defects, and slag inclusions and hidden cracks or flaws cannot be detected using this method. Other tests have been devised to find these faults without either damaging or destroying the work. Q: What types of test come under the heading [...]

Inspection

May 16, 2010

Inspection Q: What tests and inspection procedures can be carried out to check the quality of the weld and weld metal and to detect any possible defects caused by the welding process? A: They can be divided broadly into four main groups: viz. visual inspection. non- destructive testing. testing for corrosion by liquids and gases. [...]

Defects in Welded Pipelines

May 13, 2010

Defects in Welded Pipelines
Q: What defects can be found in welded joints?
A: Welded joints might have some of the following defects:
- Lack of penetrations sometimes referred to as “incomplete Penetration ” or ” Lack of fusion”.
- Porosity
- Slag inclusion
- Undercutting
- Cracking
Q: What is meant by the term ” Lack of penetration”?
A: Lack penetration is where the fusion of the metal has not penetrated to the full depth of the joint, and has caused a partial weld to take place. Common causes which lead to this defect are:

Weld Inspection

May 10, 2010

Weld Inspection Ultrasonic nondestructive testing is well established as a method of insuring the integrity of structural welds in steel, titanium, and aluminum, being able to identify cracking, porosity, incomplete penetration, inclusions, lack of sidewall fusion, and similar defects that can compromise weld strength. Ultrasonic testing with portable flaw detectors and
